Boston Dynamics has appointed Rohit Prasad, a former senior artificial intelligence executive at Amazon, as its new chief executive officer, bringing a leader with deep experience in AI development to one of the world's best-known robotics companies.
Prasad succeeds Robert Playter, who led Boston Dynamics through a period in which its robots moved from experimental research projects toward increasingly practical commercial applications. His appointment comes as the robotics industry enters a new phase, with advances in generative AI and machine learning allowing robots to interpret their surroundings, learn tasks and respond more naturally to changing environments.
Before joining Boston Dynamics, Prasad spent years at Amazon, where he was closely involved in the company's artificial intelligence efforts. He previously led Alexa and Amazon's artificial general intelligence organisation, giving him experience at the intersection of AI software, consumer technology and large-scale product development.
That background could prove significant for Boston Dynamics. The company has built a reputation around highly capable machines such as its Spot quadruped robot and Atlas humanoid robot, but the next challenge is making sophisticated robotics useful at commercial scale.
Under Prasad, the company will face pressure to turn advances in physical AI into products that businesses can actually deploy. Manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, inspection and other industrial sectors are increasingly exploring robots that can perform tasks traditionally requiring human labour.
The leadership change therefore represents more than a routine executive appointment. It signals how closely AI and robotics are becoming intertwined, with the intelligence powering machines becoming just as important as the hardware itself.
For Boston Dynamics, Prasad's challenge will be to combine its decades of robotics expertise with the rapidly developing capabilities of modern AI—and determine how far intelligent machines can move from impressive demonstrations into everyday business operations.
