Goldman Sachs Executives Set for More Than $500 Million in Special Bonuses

Goldman Sachs is preparing to hand out more than $500 million in special equity awards to around 20 of its senior executives, putting an unusually large spotlight on executive compensation at one of Wall Street’s biggest investment banks.

The awards, originally granted in 2021, are expected to be finalized later this month after a five-year performance period. The value of the awards is linked to Goldman Sachs’ performance relative to its competitors during that period. CEO David Solomon is expected to receive more than $100 million, while President John Waldron and several senior business leaders are also among the beneficiaries.

The structure is significant because these are not ordinary annual bonuses. Performance-based equity awards are designed to reward executives for longer-term results while encouraging them to remain with the company. In Goldman's case, the bank says the awards reflect a period in which it outperformed many of its rivals.

The payout also comes at an interesting moment for Wall Street. Major banks are preparing to report third-quarter results, while investment banking and trading activity remain important drivers of earnings.

Goldman's decision illustrates how heavily financial institutions can use long-term incentives to retain senior leadership. It also puts executive pay back in the spotlight, particularly as shareholders increasingly examine whether exceptionally large rewards are sufficiently connected to sustainable business performance.
